چکیده

Process integration is motivated from economic benefits, but it also impacts on the plant behavior introducing interactions and in many cases making the process more difficult to control and operate. During the operation utility flow rates and bypasses are widely used for effective control of process stream target temperatures, but the number of utility units is usually less than the number of process streams in the network and some bypasses should be selected. This paper addresses the optimal bypass design for heat exchanger networks. It consists in a model-based iterative procedure considering controllability metrics and worst-case disturbance rejection with minimum economic penalty. This is essentially a piecewise linearization approach producing excellent results. The methodology proposed is demonstrated using a case study with 3 different structures, making possible a comparison among different options on a quantitative basis, taking into account the optimal operation attainable with minimum total annual cost. These results clearly point out for the need of a simultaneous framework for design with controllability and profitability. The main goal of this work is to contribute within the field of optimal operation and control of HENs and the definition of the operational controllability concept.

Synthesis of Heat Exchanger Networks for Controllability

Heat exchanger networks are widely employed in the chemical processing industries to recover energy, resulting in reduced operating costs. Several methodologies can be found in the literature for the design of heat exchanger networks. Typical criteria are maximum energy recovery and minimum heat transfer area. However, the heat integration of process streams can lead to process structures that ...

Assessing the Controllability of Heat Exchanger Networks

Improving energy efficiency is probably the most generic issue for the process industry today, and process integration is a common tool to successfully achieve this. However, an increased level of process integration, usually implemented by re-circulation and other physical feedback structures, can increase the complexity of the dynamics drastically. This, in turn, implies increased control dif...

Influence of unsuitable operational conditions on the transient performance of a small hydrogen liquefier

Joule-Thomson cooling systems are used in refrigeration processes such as cryogenic gas liquefaction. Although extensive studies have been carried out by researchers, most of them include cryogenic heat exchangers and their associated fields. In the current study, an attempt was made to indicate the effect of using inappropriate operational conditions in a cryogenic Joule-Thomson cooling system...

Retrofit of Heat Exchanger Networks Considering Existing Structure: A New Targeting Procedure

A new retrofit targeting procedure, based on pinch technology has been developed. The new procedure considers existing structure of a given network and finds the most compatible configuration with the network. To achieve this aim, the procedure uses a linear programming technique that maximize the compatibility. Good compatibility between old and new networks helps to make the best use of c...

The Pinch Design Method for Networks

A novel method is presented for the design of heat exchanger networks. The method is the first to combine sufficient simplicity to be used by hand with near certainty to identify “best” designs, even for large problems. “Best” designs feature the highest degree of energy recovery possible with a given number of capital items. Moreover, they feature network patterns required for good controllabi...
